An Alpine university city with an ageing population
Grenoble combines a large research university, national laboratories and engineering schools with a growing number of residents in their eighties. That mix creates an obvious match: students need affordable rooms near the tram, and many older people live alone in flats built for families.
France has a specific agreement for this, separate from ordinary tenancy law, reserved for hosts aged 60 or above and guests under 30. In practice, almost every Grenoble arrangement goes through one local organisation rather than through private advertisements or national platforms.
Meet DIGI
Domicile Inter-Générations Isérois is a recognised public-interest association based on Boulevard Maréchal-Joffre and a member of the national Cohabilis network. A regional newspaper reported in August 2022 that it had arranged 1,125 pairings in Isère since its creation, including 97 new ones in 2021.
What the guest actually does
Expect conversation, shared dinners, an evening of television, help with shopping or opening the shutters each morning. Personal care and nursing are excluded. One older survey put the average host age at about 82 and the average student age near 25.
Who can host?
Homeowners, private tenants and social-housing tenants can all host, the latter with their landlord's consent. Couples are accepted. The City of Grenoble directory links the association to several districts, including Berriat, Mutualité, Abbaye and Villeneuve.
What it costs and how that compares
Local sources describe a monthly utilities contribution of about 50 euros, while the city directory quotes a starting figure of 60 euros. An annual membership of around 180 euros is added. The room itself is lent rather than rented, which explains the low total.
Other solidarity housing in Grenoble
| Option | Monthly cost | What you give back | Intergenerational? |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIGI pairing with an older host | About 50 to 60 euros plus yearly membership | Presence and companionship | Yes |
| Crous Fauré "success residence" | 210 euros instead of 260 | Tutoring other students | No |
| Afev Kaps flat-shares | About 295 euros including charges, electricity extra | Neighbourhood volunteering project | No |
The Grenoble Alpes University student portal lists all three side by side. For international students without a French guarantor, each of these routes can be easier to access than the private market, though only DIGI offers life alongside an older resident.
Grenoble rents in 2024
The local rent observatory measured a 2024 median of 11.4 euros per square metre across the urban area, with a quarter of rents above 13.2 euros. Inside the city, medians ranged from 11.2 to 12.4 euros depending on the zone.
A national synthesis of local observatories, published in 2026, puts the 2024 median for three-room flats in the Grenoble area at 10.8 euros per square metre, slightly below Montpellier but clearly above most medium-sized French towns.
Rent control since 2025
According to ANIL, Grenoble-Alpes Metropole has capped rents on standard leases since 20 January 2025 across all or part of 21 municipalities. A 2026 newsletter from the local charity Un toit pour tous reports that compliance is patchy, with average overcharges near 163 euros monthly.
Campus life and getting around
Most university teaching takes place on the joint campus of Saint-Martin-d'Hères and Gières, east of the centre, served by tram lines B and C. Research institutes and several engineering schools sit on the Presqu'île in the north-west, near the main railway station.
A host near the B line, around Île Verte, or along the Grands Boulevards on the C line, gives a short commute. From Villeneuve in the south, a change may be required, so test the journey before agreeing to a placement.
Steps to a DIGI placement
- Contact the association by phone or email with your dates and place of study.
- Complete the application and attend an interview about motivation and availability.
- Meet the suggested host, ideally in their home.
- Pay the yearly membership and sign the agreement, which lasts up to one year and can be renewed.
- Agree in writing which evenings you will be present and what help is expected.
- Stay in touch with the association's adviser throughout the academic year.
Common misunderstandings
- Assuming DIGI acts as a rental guarantor: it does not.
- Forgetting that the yearly membership comes on top of the monthly contribution.
- Hosting in social housing without first obtaining the landlord's agreement.
- Underestimating rush-hour trams to Saint-Martin-d'Hères in winter.
- Expecting help with washing or medication, which lies outside homesharing.
Relief for family carers
Relatives living far away often value the reassurance most. Knowing that a student sleeps in the flat most nights, opens the shutters and notices when something seems wrong can delay a move into residential care and ease pressure on family carers.
Grenoble FAQ
These answers reflect what international students at Grenoble Alpes University, their parents and older residents of the Isère valley most often want to know before committing to several months of shared daily life under one roof.
Is the room really free?
The room is lent, but the student pays around fifty euros a month towards bills plus an annual membership. Even combined, the total stays far below the price of a studio at the median rent recorded by the observatory.
Does rent control apply to homesharing?
Not directly. The caps target ordinary residential leases, whereas homesharing uses a separate agreement. They are still useful as a benchmark when you compare a lent room with private studios advertised across the Grenoble metropolitan area.
Can I live outside Grenoble itself?
Yes. DIGI works throughout Isère, and its solidarity flat-share model has been considered for Bourgoin-Jallieu and Villefontaine in the north of the department. Check transport links carefully if your classes take place on the main campus.
Does DIGI run shared flats too?
It has. In the Mistral district, three students once shared a social-housing flat and each spent five hours a week visiting about thirty older tenants of the building, for a maximum of three years. Ask the association whether such places are currently open.
